About the Artist

Sophie was born in Hilton Head, SC to parents transplanted from New York. In 2006 her family moved to the tiny rural town of Estill, where she developed her talents by spending her days outside painting portraits of her chickens and goats.

As a homeschooled student, Sophie eschewed the traditional classroom for experiential learning. As she explored the coastal towns of Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah, Sophie became fascinated by the beauty of the buildings, parks, and architecture of the lowcountry . Now a working artist, her unique use of color to convey mood and energy in otherwise ordinary subjects has made her a new artist to watch on the regional scene. Award winning art conservator Georgiana Nedelcu, of Universal Fine Art Conservation, remarked at a recent show, "The quality of Sophie's work is absolutely worthy of any gallery in South Carolina." She has completed numerous public art projects funded by private individuals, businesses, municipalities, and state and regional arts agencies. Her work has received considerable media attention regionally and nationally.

The art featured as the banner for this website is a large mural on Highway 321 in downtown Estill. Part of a creative placemaking project funded by South Arts, Sophie has worked collaboratively with members of the community to create a design which represents the diversity of Estill and the town's commitment to the arts as a vehicle for social and economic change. Sophie is comitted to economic and social justice and often lends her time and talents to projects that advance those goals. To that end, she is an associate artist with SLAY (Support Lowcountry Artists Y'all) and selects many projects based on the anticipated community impact.
