The Ant & The Dove

This series reinterprets the fable of The Ant and the Dove through chalk pastel illustration, focusing on themes of coexistence, interdependence, and quiet acts of survival within the natural world. In the story, a dove saves an ant from drowning by dropping a leaf into the water, and later the ant repays the act of kindness by biting a hunter’s toe, causing him to miss the dove. The fable resonated with me because of its emphasis on mutual care between small and often overlooked forms of life. Much of my work explores the relationship between nature, place, and society, particularly the ways living things adapt and persist within larger systems. I was drawn to this story because it presents nature not as passive scenery, but as a connected environment shaped by reciprocity, vulnerability, and coexistence. The moment where the tiny ant is capable of protecting the dove also challenges traditional ideas of scale, power, and significance within the natural world. Using chalk pastel allowed me to create soft textures, saturated color, and a sense of movement that reflects the emotional tone of the story. Rather than approaching the illustrations with strict realism, I focused on atmosphere, gesture, and expressive forms that emphasize the emotional relationship between the characters and their environment. The series balances observation with imagination, presenting the natural world as both fragile and interconnected.
